Take a Breath – September’s free episode

In this episode, we explore how the way we breathe at work – often without thinking about it – can leave us running on shallow, upper-chest breaths that do little to calm us down. Julie Bristow, an experienced vocal coach, leads this discussion, unpacking the difference between our everyday “passive” breathing and the calming effect of diaphragmatic, or “belly”, breathing.

She also demonstrates a simple technique you can use at your desk – breathing in through the nose to a count of four and out to a count of four – along with a quick tension-release exercise, so you can find a moment of calm whenever a stressful moment at work catches you off guard.

You’ll hear thought-provoking conversations with people from the world of L&D and HR who’ll unpack the issues that matter right now – from building capable managers to tackling everyday challenges in growing organisations. Each episode is practical, human and refreshingly jargon-light, with real stories and examples that make complex, relevant topics feel more manageable.

Averaging 8 to 10 minutes long, they’re the ideal length to take a short break away from the screen (and we all know how important that is), stand up and stretch, go for a walk, or take time out to make a tea.
