Mandatory compliance training for UK businesses

UK law asks that your staff get the training they need to work safely, and that you can show you've taken reasonable steps. So the question worth asking is simple. If something went wrong tomorrow, could you prove your team was trained?

Training almost every employee needs

Health and safety

The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 say people need training when they join, and again when their risks change.

Display screen equipment

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and the Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992 cover lifting, carrying and desk work.

Equality and harassment

The Equality Act 2010 lets you defend a claim if you took all reasonable steps to prevent it. And since October 2024, you’ve had a duty to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment.

First aid

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 ask you to have the right first aid cover, including at least an appointed person.

Fire safety

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, staff need to know your fire precautions and what to do if the alarm goes off.

Data protection

UK GDPR asks you to show how you look after personal data. Trained staff are one of the first things the ICO looks for.

Compliance training by sector

Care worker in blue uniform smiling and talking with an elderly man during a home visit

Care

CQC Regulation 18 says staff need the training their role calls for. New care workers are expected to complete the Care Certificate.

Smiling teaching assistant showing a colourful papier-mâché model to a young pupil in a primary classroom

Schools and colleges

Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) expects safeguarding training at induction, with updates at least once a year. The Prevent duty applies too.

Higher education teacher compliance training

Higher education

OfS Condition E6 sets out what universities and colleges must do to tackle harassment and sexual misconduct.

Barista in a striped apron making coffee at an espresso machine in a cafe

Hospitality and retail

Anyone handling food needs supervision and training in food hygiene for the work they do. Licensed premises also need an age verification policy.

Construction and engineering compliance training

Construction and engineering

CDM 2015, the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and COSHH 2002 all call for trained, competent people. Anyone who might disturb asbestos needs awareness training too.

Colleagues collaborating around a laptop in an office, demonstrating good workplace etiquette

Finance and professional services

The Money Laundering Regulations 2017 say that relevant staff must be trained. The Bribery Act 2010 requires you to have adequate procedures in place.

Compliance matrix and automated refreshers

If your compliance lives in a spreadsheet and a calendar reminder, you'll know where it can slip. Someone changes role, a certificate quietly expires, and you only find out the week the inspector's due. Our LMS takes the chasing off your plate.

Map what each role needs

Tell us about your roles, departments and sites. Your account manager will help you build your matrix, so everyone gets the right courses, from the warehouse floor to the boardroom.

Assign it once

Assign courses by role, department or location in a few clicks. New starters are enrolled automatically, so their induction training's ready from day one.

Let the reminders do the nudging

Staff get automatic reminders until they've finished. No more chasing people, or nagging managers to get their teams through.

Train wherever they work

Courses work on phone, tablet or desktop, with videos, quizzes and short reading sections. Many take less than two hours.

Check the matrix

Your compliance matrix shows who's complete, who's in progress and who's overdue, by business, department or person, in real time.

Refreshers take care of themselves

When annual training's due again, the course is reassigned automatically and the reminders start over.

Downloadable evidence and reporting

Training only protects you if you can prove it happened. Every completion on our LMS is dated, certified and ready to export, so an audit request takes minutes rather than a week of digging through folders.

  • A CPD-certified certificate for every course completed, showing the learner's name and completion date.
  • Compliance reports by person, team, department or site, straight from your matrix.
  • Overdue and expiring training reports, so you can fix a gap before it turns into a finding.
  • Full data exports for your HR system, board pack or insurer.

Compliance Training FAQs

What compliance training is mandatory for employees in the UK?

close

Every employer needs to train staff in health and safety. That includes fire safety and the risks of their particular job, such as manual handling or screen use. You’ll also need the right first aid cover. Data protection and equality training aren’t named as set courses in law, but they’re how most employers show they’re meeting UK GDPR and the Equality Act 2010. Depending on your sector, you might need more, such as safeguarding in schools or food hygiene in hospitality.

How often does mandatory training need to be refreshed?

close

Most UK law doesn’t give a fixed date. It says training should be repeated when it’s needed, for example when risks change or skills fade. Lots of organisations refresh core courses every year, and some sector guidance sets its own timings, such as the annual safeguarding updates in KCSIE. On our LMS, refreshers reassign themselves when they’re due, so you don’t need to keep track of dates.

Is online compliance training legally acceptable?

close

For most awareness-level topics, yes. Online training is a recognised way to give people the information and instruction they need, as long as it fits their role and you keep a record. Some roles need hands-on training as well, such as a qualified First Aid at Work first aider. For those, our network of 600+ trainers can come to you with in-house training.

Can we add our own policies and procedures?

close

Yes, and it’s easy to do. Build your own courses in minutes with our course builder, or upload your existing SCORM files. They’re assigned, tracked and reported on in the same compliance matrix as our courses.

How do we prove our staff have completed their training?

close

Everyone who completes a course gets a CPD-certified digital certificate. You can also download compliance reports by person, team, department or site, and export the full data whenever an inspector, auditor or insurer asks.

What happens if someone doesn't complete their training?

close

They’ll get automatic reminders until they do, and they’ll show as overdue on your compliance matrix, so you can see exactly who’s still to finish.

How much does compliance training cost?

close

Essential starts at £660 for five users, and a team of 25 starts at £1,815 a year. The cost per person drops as your team grows, and there are extra savings on 24- and 36-month terms. We also offer a price match guarantee.

What's the difference between Essential and Plus+?

close
