Can You Help Me, Please?

The approach to the problem

Effective people get help from their colleagues. How and when you ask maximises your chance of success. But remember, before you ask for help think about whether you can resolve the problem yourself.

Positively Disagreeing

Construction not destruction

Disagreement can be good. It can test ideas, cause us to think about things from a different perspective and ultimately lead to better outcomes. If handled poorly it leads to conflict and poor relationships with our colleagues. Using positive language in difficult conversations turns discussion into healthy debate rather than negative argument.

Understanding Motivation

The ups and the downs

What inspires one person could be what deters another. People are motivated by different things. Acknowledging the stimuli responsible for fluctuating levels of motivation in both yourself and others, will enable you to create opportunities where you can increase levels of energy, innovation, and productivity. This benefits mental health as well as team wellbeing.

Addressing Bad Habits

Knowing when to say something

If you ask colleagues to give examples of the antisocial behaviour they’ve encountered during their careers, expect to hear a range of answers. Some replies might shock you and others might not. From bad smells to unusual noises and weird habits, a behaviour that distracts and bothers one person may go unnoticed by another. If you’re noticing that an antisocial behaviour is more than just a one-off and is affecting your ability to work comfortably, you do need to say something. But it’s knowing how to. Whether it’s a familiar working relationship with the colleague or not, the way in which you initially confront the situation will determine the success of the outcome.

Managing Anxiety

Too many ‘what ifs?’

Anxiety, if not managed carefully, can lead to an increase in irrational thinking. Everybody has irrational thoughts but having too many can negatively affect our thinking and behaviour at work, and at home. Using an awareness strategy enables you to replace the thoughts that lead to distress, hopelessness and even anger, with much healthier, rational alternatives.

Making New Connections

Reaching out to new people

Networking with the people at work who you don’t yet know provides opportunities to exchange ideas, insights, and interests. It creates an open atmosphere of possibilities which is beneficial to your own professional development and the progression of your organisation.

Once you’re in a routine where you talk to the same people every day, it can become hard to break out of the habit and reach out to new people. But it’s always worth reaching out and striking up a conversation with a colleague you have never spoken to before.

Giving Objective Feedback

Always be objective

When you are coaching someone, it’s important to give neutral, non-judgemental feedback. Non-judgemental feedback is like holding a mirror up to someone so that they can see for themselves what they are doing, how they are doing it, and the effect their behaviour has on other people.

Dealing With Negativity

The knock-on effect

Negative people are rarely successful, but they do feel rewarded by the social popularity and comedic reputation, sometimes associated with putting others down. Unless it is isolated, a negative attitude becomes infectious, damaging the morale and performance of the team. There are skills you can use to isolate the negativity without causing conflict.

Fresh Perspectives

A Shared Responsibility

Everyone has an impact on organisational culture. To promote a culture that nurtures creative thinking you need to prepare the groundwork whether you’re a manager or not. Your colleagues need to feel safe enough to question the status quo and confident enough to put forward their own novel ideas, without fear of feeling silly or humiliated.
